Play Brudvig Hockey on your TV
Brudvig Hockey can run on a TV while everyone uses their phone as a controller. Up to six players, three a side, with the computer filling any empty spots. There's no console, no app and no account: the TV opens a web page, and phones join with a QR code. Here's how to set it up on every kind of screen.
What you need
- A screen with a web browser, or a way to get one onto it. Any of the options below works.
- A phone for each player. Phones become the controllers.
- Internet for the TV and every phone. They don't need to be on the same Wi-Fi network: everything connects through brudvighockey.com.
Step 1: Put brudvighockey.com/tv on the screen
Smart TV with a browser
- Open the TV's web browser app.
- Go to brudvighockey.com/tv, or open brudvighockey.com and choose Play on TV.
- The lobby appears with a QR code, a short link and a code to join.
Typing with a TV remote is slow, so it's worth bookmarking the page for next time. TV browsers vary a lot; if yours struggles with 3D, use a laptop on HDMI or mirror a phone instead.
Fire TV
- Install a web browser from the Fire TV app store if you don't have one (Amazon's Silk browser is common).
- Open the browser and go to brudvighockey.com/tv.
Google TV and Android TV
- Install a web browser from the Play Store on the TV if there isn't one.
- Open it and go to brudvighockey.com/tv.
A laptop or computer on HDMI
- Connect the laptop to the TV with an HDMI cable and switch the TV to that input.
- Open brudvighockey.com/tv in the laptop's browser and make it full screen.
This is often the smoothest option, because laptops are usually more powerful than the computers inside TVs.
A phone or tablet mirrored to the TV (AirPlay or Cast)
- On the phone or tablet that will be the TV screen, open brudvighockey.com/tv.
- Mirror the screen: on iPhone or iPad, use Screen Mirroring (AirPlay) to an Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible TV; on Android, use Cast or your phone's screen-sharing option to a Chromecast or Google TV.
The mirrored device is just the screen: it runs the game and can't be a controller at the same time, so players join with other phones. Mirroring adds a little delay, so a TV browser or HDMI laptop is usually snappier.
Step 2: Everyone joins
- The TV shows a QR code, a short link and a game code. Each player scans the QR code with their phone camera. Or open brudvighockey.com on the phone and type the code into the Have a code? box. Or share the link.
- Tap Join the game if asked. Everyone lands in the lobby, which the TV shows too.
- Each player chooses whether to watch on the TV (the phone becomes a controller only) or on their own phone. Players can mix: some on the TV, some on phones.
Step 3: Pick sides
- In the lobby, each player picks Red or Blue. Up to three players a side.
- Tap Ready.
- When everyone's ready, a 10-second countdown starts, then the puck drops.
Empty spots are played by the computer, so 1-on-1, 2-on-1, 3-on-3 or everyone on one side against a computer team all work. Playing alone? With one player in the lobby, the TV offers Play the computer.
With one player on a side, that player controls whichever skater has the puck and switches on defense. With two or three on a side, each player keeps their own skater for the whole game.
During the game
- Controls on the phone are the same as always: thumbstick on the left, ✕ □ ○ △ on the right. See how to play Brudvig Hockey.
- Your phone shows your side ("YOU'RE RED" or "YOU'RE BLUE") over the controls, and buzzes on hits and goals on phones that support vibration.
- Switch screens: a phone watching the TV has a This phone button to switch to watching on the phone instead. In the lobby, Watch on: this phone / the TV switches either way.
- Settings (⚙️) in a game with friends has Restart game, which starts over for everyone, and Select sides, which takes everyone back to the lobby to change teams. Nobody has to rejoin.
Troubleshooting
The TV page won't load or is very slow
Some older TV browsers can't run 3D games well. Try a different browser app, a laptop on HDMI, or mirroring from a phone.
The QR code won't scan
Move closer, or skip the QR code: open brudvighockey.com on the phone and type the code shown on the TV into the Have a code? box.
The game lags on the TV
Mirroring adds delay. A TV browser or a laptop on HDMI is better. Also check the TV's Wi-Fi signal, and turn on the TV's "game mode" if it has one to reduce display lag.
A player dropped out
The computer takes over their skater right away. When they reload the same browser tab, they get it back. Opening the link in a new tab joins as a new player instead.
The game is full
Six players is the most a match takes.
The TV page was closed or reloaded
The TV runs the game. Reloading /tv starts a brand-new game with a new code, so everyone joins again. Keep the TV page open during play.
We want to change teams
Open ⚙️ and choose Select sides. Everyone stays connected.
Can I use a game controller instead of a phone?
Not on the TV: in TV mode the TV only shows the game, and phones are the controllers. A gamepad works when you play on your own computer.
